Mac's Diary

We received word "We move in one hour" at 8:40 p.m., Saturday Jan. 27, 1945. We left camp at 1:00 a.m., Sunday Jan 28, 1945 and marched 28 kilometers to Freiwaldau arriving at 11:30 a.m. Jan. 28.  Left there at 5:30 p.m. after spending 6 hours in theopen with the temperature at zero [degrees].  We walked 32 kilometers to where I stopped overnight in a hotel, arrived there at 4:00 a.m. January 29th.  Stayed there until 11:30 a.m. Left there and walked 10 kilometers to Maskau--arrived there at 3:00 p.m.  Stayed there in a brick factory until 1:00 p.m. on Jan. 31st.  Left there and walked 16 kilometers arriving at 7:30 p.m.--stayed overnight in a barn, left there at 5:30 p.m. Feb. 1st  and walked 8 kilometers to Spremburg arriving at 9:00 p.m.  Stayed overnight in a tank repair shop -- had 3 air raids during the night -- left at 8:00 a.m.  and walked 5 kilometers to the train yards.  Loaded in box cars at 12:00 noon.  50 men and a German guard to a car 30 feet x 8 feet.  Left at 2:00 p.m. Feb. 2nd and was on the train until 5:00 p.m. Feb. 4th.  Left the train and walked 1 kilometer to camp.  Got in our barracks at 7:00 p.m.

 

Total Distance of walking: 100 kilometers or a little over 62 miles in 6 days.
